European Seminar on the Holocaust in Eastern Europe during the World War II

July 5 & 6, 2010
Paris

Organized at the Yahad - In Unum's European Resource Centre for Research and Learning about the Holocaust in Eastern Europe

(CERRESE)

Target

History Teachers interested in being trained on new perspectives and resources about Holocaust in Eastern Europe

Yahad - In Unum's project 'Holocaust by bullets'

Between 1941 and 1944, the Einsatzgruppen, the mobile killing units of Hitler's Third Reich, executed by shootings more than 1.5 million Jews and Roma in the Ukraine and hundreds of thousands more in Belarus and Russia.

Since 2004, the association Yahad - In Unum is systematically searching for the mass graves of the victims and has interviewed more than one thousand witnesses to the executions.

In October 15, 2009, Yahad - In Unum opened in partnership with the Sorbonne University its Paris-based European Resource Centre for Research and Learning about the Eastern Holocaust (in French: CERRESE). The Centre makes available to the public the results of its investigation: more than two hundred video testimonies and the different archival sources used to complete its unique research in the field.

European Seminar at the CERRESE

On July 5 & 6 2010, the CERRESE invites high schools History teachers from different European countries to gather and participate to the Yahad - In Unum European Seminar on the Holocaust in Eastern Europe during the World War II.

Participants will be given access to Yahad - In Unum materials collected at the CERRESE: the different sources of German and Soviet archives, contemporary recorded oral histories and contemporary photographs of executions sites and witnesses, as well as books on Jewish history. They will also be taught the methodology implemented by Yahad - In Unum during its investigation.

Historians, researchers and also members of the Yahad - In Unum team will present at the CERRESE the different faces of the 'Holocaust by bullets' including the different steps of the extermination process by shootings as well as the other ways used by the Nazis to kill the Jews and Roma in the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia; an historical perspective on the creation of ghettos and on the concentration camps; the roles played by various actors during the WWII, their functions and methods according to the villages' number of victims and the exact locations of the corpses. All of this and more will be explained for the educators' further understanding of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe as part of the whole history of the genocide of the Jews and Roma of Europe.

Dates and Place

The seminar will take place in Paris on July 5 and 6, 2010 at the CERRESE located 114 boulevard Magenta in the 10th district of Paris (metro station: Gare du Nord).
